It was Deutschland Uber Alles on 27 December in the final of the first-ever Uruguayan Golf Croquet Open (something of a last-minute affair, so less of an Open than an Ajar), as Peter Hoyer completed a clean sweep of Jonathan Lamb 7:6, actor Richard Clothier 7:2 and finally fellow German Leo Boeing 7:6.  Ian Stanton ignobly beat visiting film star Tara Fitzgerald 7:4 before even more ignobly losing to Leo 4:7.  Fighter pilot Tim Plaehn crashed and burned, and auctioneer Fernando Bonilla went under the Boeing hammer himself. Lamb was slaughtered, as usual.  The sun shone. the Viognier was dignified and stately, Peter played like ein Gott ('Mein Gott!' we were all saying) and the sanded astroturf tested the eight competitors to the full. quelle Jonathan Lamb |
